My TBR as a writer and slow reader
how I get the most out of reading a few books (& media for the book lover)

Hello, hello. I hope you are well.
Torture in its purest form is the scenario of being a slow reader who yearns to read many books. And that fate belongs to me. Although I would love to make a TBR that’s a meter in length, well, actually I can but I would never be able to read it all in a month…
While I want to read as a book lover and writer, simultaneously being a slow reader, having a full-time job and working on other passion projects, I have created a framework to get the best out of the few books I am able to read.
My TBR framework as a writer and a booklover
I don’t hit every point during every month because I can hardly get through 2 books, or 4 if I am lucky.
Sourcing recommendations from shortlists: I've made it a habit recently to look at shortlists, such as the booker prize, even the Nobel. I find that it's a good way to broaden my horizons when it comes to genres and writing styles.
Introduce myself to a new author and read atleast one book from their work (the same applies to a genre)
One book that’s popular because I don't want to feel left out: When a book is popular, my curiosity is immediately peaked. I want to know why this book has the attention of such a large portion of the population and I want to be a part of that.
Embodies a topic I am interested in: Sometimes this could be a philosophical aspect that I wish to get into or any subject matter such as art, space, etc.
My TBR for June
The Stranger by Albert Camus
I have been interested in the concept of existentialism for a while now and have found that this might be a beginner friendly book.
The Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq
From this year’s booker prize winner.
Normal people by Sally Rooney
Felt the need to explore a modern author.

Media for the book lover
All of the creators I am about to share with you can be found on pretty much any platform (TikTok, Instagram and YouTube). They are my go-to’s when it comes to the subject of books.
He is 100% the internet's librarian. Jack gives insightful reviews of books, moreover a diverse range of recommendations (not the same books you see 100 times in a row on your feed. Not just books that are trendy either).
She is such an underrated creator. While she makes videos on books in general, Moe also has a great liking in The Secret History by Donna Tartt, providing so much enjoyable commentary and deep dives that is otherwise scarce on the internet.
If you are keen in reading the more popular books, or would like to know what’s popular, Haley gives her honest opinion.
A new creator that is absolutely amazing. Caitlyn understands more than just plot and characters in books but also the ability to shift the mind of a reader. Any genre you're interested in, specifically philosophical, she has recommendations that will be just perfect for you, especially if you are a beginner.
‘That's all.’ (The Devil Wears Prada, 2006)
I hope May has been treating you phenomenally, you beautiful soul. I apologize for not being here for the entire month, since I decided to take the time to finish draft two of my novel. Funny story. The recommended thing to do once you finish writing your book, is to leave the manuscript aside for some time. I did that and well…I never missed anything more.
Anywho, I hope you enjoyed this latest blog post. (I intend to get better at this & post more in June).
Sincerely,
The Nocturnal Journal
